History of Steeplechase Racing

The history of Steeplechase racing can be traced back to Ireland in 1752. The sport was started when two very drunk, friends were trying to settle a disagreement that they were having over who had the best racing horse. Therefore, after the men had finished their fox hunting, they decided to race their horses to the closest Church Steeple. Unfortunately, the winner of the race rode straight through the church while the vicar was having a solemn funeral. This news spread swiftly to England and in 1792 their first known and recorded steeplechase races were held.

The news of this spectacular sport spread quickly from the Atlantic to the United States. In the United States, this form of racing is an extremely popular sport because of nine very well known and prominent men from New York which included John G. Follansbee, August Belmont, Frederick Gebhard, Foxhall P. Keene, A.J. Casatt, H. DeCourcy Forbes, and Frederick H. Prince.

In the early 19th century, the National Association for Steeplechase was established and founded. The purpose and mission of this foundation was to make this sport popular in the United States and assist it with growing in other countries across the Atlantic. Presently, Steeplechase races are hosted in 12 states across the United States and have accumulative annual earnings of five million dollars. People who attend these events attend the races to watch the jockeys run their horses but they also attend them to place bets as well as double and triple their earnings. Some people are novices and others are considered experts because they study this art to spot out or identify the best-known horses as well as the best jockey who has exceptional talent. Therefore, in addition to attracting the best talent, the sport also has the attention of the influential and powerful men and women in the country.

Some of the most prestigious as well as the oldest steeplechase horseracing events are the Montpelier Hunt Race Events, which were started in 1929. The events were hosted on the estates or property of Former President James Madison. These are popular sports where it is great to watch as well as be seen at. This sport is supported by millions of admirers and fans across the country. They are sponsored as major events. Therefore, corporate sponsors compete with one another to gain sponsorship of specific events. This is because it is also known for attracting the best talent (horse owners, horses riders, horses) and it can raise millions of charitable dollars for well known charities.
