Peru Travel: Marcahuasi
Need a weekend away from the busy Peruvian capital? Marcahuasi is a mere three hour drive from Lima and is a dream getaway for hiking enthusiasts. The natural beauty draws Limeños from all corners of the city. The sunny, volcanic plateau in the foothills of the Andes is approximately 13,000 feet (4,100 meters) above sea level. The fresh air will give you the peace you need before returning to Lima or your next destination.
Discovered by Daniel Ruzo in 1952, this stone forest is filled with huge rocks shaped by the elements. The main attraction in the area is the mountain summit. Visitors set up their tents in the amphitheatre, a large grass and dirt plateau completely surrounded by rocks. It is an ideal location to camp as the large rocks provide a natural shield from the cold wind at night. Sleep on the west side of the amphitheatre so the morning sun will warm your tent. There are a few trash cans and small bathroom, it is very basic but the experience is priceless and the sights unbelievable. You can also walk, horseback ride, and mountain bike in the area.
The nearby town of San Pedro de Casta has a small museum which house some skeletal remains and an overview of the local history. If you would rather get a taste of culture first hand, this is a great place to experience rural Peruvian life. As you walk to the summit, you will see locals easily walking as you huff and puff. If you're breathing too heavily, you can rent a donkey to carry your bags and fire wood to the summit, it costs about 15 Soles.
To get to this mountain retreat, you can get a bus from Lima to the town of Chosica, where you can get another bus to the San Pedro de Casta, the town at the trailhead to Marcahuasi. Most visitors arrive mid-day in San Pedro de Casta, eat lunch, load up their donkey, horse, or backpack and head up the trail. The 4 km trail is uphill and takes about 4 hours but when you get to the top you will understand why Limeños love this place so much. Entrance to the trail is only S/. 5 for Peruvians and S/. 10 for foreigners, but camping is free, just be sure to bring your passport or DNI.
If you would like slightly more luxurious accommodations than sleeping on the hard ground, you should spend the night in Chosica and transfer to San Pedro de Casta during the day. San Pedro de Casta only has a few basic hotels and a budget hostel for backpackers.
